Your textbook has no audiobook. Make one.

Search the audiobook stores for your course textbook and you will come up empty. Drop the chapter you have to read this week and listen on the way to class.

Why textbooks are never recorded

Textbooks change edition every few years, are full of figures, sidebars and exercises, and sell to a class, not a crowd. Recording one in a studio costs more than a publisher would ever earn from the audio, so they simply do not.

Listen to it anyway

1.
Download the chapter PDF or the EPUB from your course platform or the publisher’s site.
2.
Drop it here. Headings become chapters, page numbers and running headers stay out of the narration.
3.
Pick a calm, clear narrator and press play. Follow the highlighted words in the PDF view, or just listen.

Study tips that work by ear

•
Do the first pass by ear on the commute, then the close read with a pen. The second read is faster.
•
Slow to 0.9x for dense theory, speed to 1.5x for review.
•
Bookmark what will be on the exam and jump straight back to it.
•
Upload one chapter at a time: it is quicker and keeps you on this week’s reading.

Questions people ask

My textbook is a scanned PDF. Will it work?

If the scan has a text layer, yes. Many scanner apps add one. A scan that is only images has no words to read, so run it through OCR first.

Can I upload the whole book?

Files go up to 10 MB. Big textbooks are easier chapter by chapter, which is how you read them anyway.

How are formulas and tables read?

As the text the file holds, so glance at the page for equations and dense tables. Explanations and arguments are where listening shines.

Is there a free option for students?

Yes. Free includes unlimited Standard voices in English and 10 minutes of Premium voices, so English textbooks cost nothing to listen to.
